Motstanden mot utbygging av Alta-Kautokeino-vassdraget var ikke bare en miljøvernsak. Den handlet også om storsamfunnets forhold til etniske minoriteter. Konflikten som foregikk over flere tiår, endte med et skifte i norsk samepolitikk.
I 1976 laget Arvid Sveen protestplakaten «Varig vern av Alta-Kautokeino-elva!». Hvorfor ble den så ikonisk og troverdig?
